What are they getting out of the extra-curriculars?

When I look at what activities we choose to expose our kids to, I always ask the question of how will the experiences help them not only now but later in life. Most kids will not go professional in a sport, so why invest so much time, energy, and money in it?
Well, for me, sports offers huge advantages for my kids. They learn dedication, responsibility, how to be a team player, how to train hard and work towards achieving a goal, and the importance of being physically fit just to name a few. Other activities such as music and drama train the mind to think orderly, and they encourage poise. They learn confidence-building skills in extracurricular activities, also.
So, tonight my oldest sons went through the annual travel soccer try-outs. As I watched their feet dribbling the balls while pushing hard through the drills, I reflected on how valuable I think these life experiences are for them. I know my earlier years as a college dancer and choreographer (captain of Ole Miss Rebelettes), gymnast, and cheerleader taught me valuable lessons that have helped me in my adult life-at least I think so.
Even though most nights we are not home sitting down for dinner, I’m banking on the fact that they’re getting those priceless moments in other ways.
Of course, we ordered pizza for dinner and ate around 9:30. Baths followed along with studying percentages at 10:30.

It just is what it is….

Cyber Cold War with China

I’ve still got computer science education on the brain for my kids.  Not sure why, but I am persistently feeling like I need to educate myself and them much more extensively than what we are doing at home.  So, in my standard google search, I ran across this website:

http://www.codecademy.com

I may have mentioned before that I’m hoping to get my kids together with a couple of friends to delve into the computer world a bit more, learning basic coding skills, etc.  I want my kids to know how to design the video games, not just play the video games.  This is key here.

Also, in my google search, look at the article I ran across:

http://money.cnn.com/2013/02/19/technology/security/china-hacking-war/index.html

Is it us against China or do they own us already?

Best to bump up the education and not be a puppet as far as I’m concerned.  Do I sound paranoid?  Possibly, but those feelings may be warranted.

On a lighter note, I treated myself to a McDonald’s caramel sundae with nuts tonight.  I call it my mommy treat.  This was after I did some class at the gym called “piloxing”-decent workout..

Off to prep for what lies ahead!
