How did you spend it?

My Mother’s Day summary:

Slept until 9:30, played hookie from church (horrible traffic), ate Big Breakfast that hubby made along with presentation of homemade cards by the kids (tear-jerker), 2 afternoon soccer games, worked in children’s garden weeding and planting, ate left-overs from Big Breakfast. I’ll let the pictures say the rest..

Now back to the reality of academics..Game on.

Happy mother’s Day to you

We’ve had our usual activities this weekend. Thrown in the mix is Mother’s Day. Neither of our mothers live close to us, so it’s bittersweet to only be able to celebrate by sending gifts and not enjoying the day in person.
I actually bought my own cake today. One of my sons wanted to make the cake but changed his mind when he saw the store-bought version. He also wanted to buy flowers, but I talked him into buying annuals for the children’s garden in our backyard. Tomorrow, we hope to work in the garden cleaning out the weeds and planting the new flowers.
This evening was a rare event for me as I was able to shop for myself. My husband had asked me what I wanted and really, I just wanted some me-time to look at clothes and shoes. That wish wasn’t really granted, however, because my daughter wanted to go with me. You can imagine how that went. She brought home more items than I did. The funny thing is she seems to really have an eye for fashion, unlike myself. Not to mention shopping for clothing is so frustrating for me because I’m petite and rarely do they make anything that fits correctly. Needless to say, my selfish mommy moment was overshadowed by my young fashionista, but that’s really how the mommy life is. Complete self-absorption flew out the window the moment the first child came into being. I will rest on the fact that that’s a good thing, though. My rare shopping event tonight was priceless watching my daughter carefully select things for she and myself. Mommy memories…

Online high schools recommended by Calvert

I hope you can open this file.  This is a list of high schools that homeschoolers can potentially use.  Calvert sent this to me a year or two ago, so I thought I’d share it here.  Of note, Calvert will be offering high schools classes beginning in the fall of 2014.  I’m looking forward to seeing their class descriptions and how much they intend to charge.  I’m already staring at 4 different grade levels to pay for this fall-ugh…

What are they getting out of the extra-curriculars?

When I look at what activities we choose to expose our kids to, I always ask the question of how will the experiences help them not only now but later in life. Most kids will not go professional in a sport, so why invest so much time, energy, and money in it?
Well, for me, sports offers huge advantages for my kids. They learn dedication, responsibility, how to be a team player, how to train hard and work towards achieving a goal, and the importance of being physically fit just to name a few. Other activities such as music and drama train the mind to think orderly, and they encourage poise. They learn confidence-building skills in extracurricular activities, also.
So, tonight my oldest sons went through the annual travel soccer try-outs. As I watched their feet dribbling the balls while pushing hard through the drills, I reflected on how valuable I think these life experiences are for them. I know my earlier years as a college dancer and choreographer (captain of Ole Miss Rebelettes), gymnast, and cheerleader taught me valuable lessons that have helped me in my adult life-at least I think so.
Even though most nights we are not home sitting down for dinner, I’m banking on the fact that they’re getting those priceless moments in other ways.
Of course, we ordered pizza for dinner and ate around 9:30. Baths followed along with studying percentages at 10:30.

It just is what it is….

Time to regroup

Busy day of church,Target run, 2 Wal-mart runs, grocery shopping, house cleaning, laundry, travel soccer, and yardwork.

No, there was no breakfast in bed. This has been a long week for hubby, so there was no expectation from me. He needed a break, too. I’m also in the midst of redoing my youngest son’s room. Hence, the multiple store runs. Just ordered some items from Pottery Barn for Kids. Fun.

The kids were so kind to me today, and that’s what’s really special.

I did escape for dinner to meet one of my dear girlfriends. We treated ourselves to salmon, lobster bisque, and carrot cake.

Now, back to reality. It’s after midnight, and I need to prep for tomorrow.

Spa Day

Had my first ever microdermabrasion treatment today at a local spa. Yummy.
Finally decided to be proactive on this age thing. Of course, their robes are way too big for me.  I look like a 10 year old wearing my mother’s clothes!
Happy Mother’s Day.

Another exhausting day

Mother’s day tea, probability, fractions, operations, took lunch and a birthday present to my girlfriend, technology lessons, logic, critical thinking, poetry, art history, spelling with SWR, money, independent reading, matter, Paul Bunyan, team gymnastics, and more travel soccer try-outs. It’s been a full and somewhat stressful week. I may hibernate this weekend!

An honest stressor for me at this point in motherhood-not having a clear, defined path of interest for my oldest kid. I hear parents talk about their child wanting to do a certain “thing” from an early age. I don’t have that feedback from my son yet, and it bothers me. I know it shouldn’t, but admittedly, it does. Need quiet time to calm my anxiety..

Back and running

Back home from road trip and hit the ground running.
Morning filled with soccer, lax, and girl scouts tea. Haven’t even unpacked yet!
