Dumb blonde

Today, we only had 1/2 day of academics, not because of any field trip or other noteworthy experience, but because I had to get my roots touched up! Wish I could claim to be a natural blonde but no such luck here. However, it is refreshing when I can take a break from the daily grind to do something for myself:)
Nevertheless, we still were able to cover some basic core subjects such as the 3 R’s. Hard to really skimp on those.
I’ll be spending some time this weekend doing a bit of personal research on how better to present math in our home studies and am actually looking forward to educating myself more in this area. I may catch up on some sleep, as well.

The Tortoise and the Hare

Excelsior, the Classical/Charlotte-Mason cooperative we are a member of, attended a play of Aesop’s Fables performed at the local community college. The kids really enjoyed watching the performers, one of which was the talented daughter of a homeschooling girlfriend. The rest of our day was spent enjoying some holiday munchies and rotating classes of science, music history, and language arts. My oldest son delivered his oral presentation of Thomas Edison to his peers. I had one of those surreal moments as I watched him speak thinking how he’s growing up so fast. It’s those moments that encourage you to continue with this homeschooling business.

Validation

I’m always wondering how I’m doing as my kids’ primary teacher and how they are doing academically in this setting.
Recently, I administered the IOWA/CogAT exam to my oldest. While I don’t assume the exam is an all-knowing sort of thing, it does provide some nice feedback on areas of strengths and weaknesses. I was very nervous to open and see his results, knowing that it would be a direct reflection of my teaching skills. Thankfully, his results were of a positive nature. Had they not been, I might be crying as I write this now. There’s a great deal of pressure that comes with this job. If they do well, you can breathe a little easier, if only for a fleeting moment. Tomorrow still brings new challenges and hurdles.

Alternative universes! Look kids, this is why we are talking about electrons today!

We have been studying the atomic model in our local co-op class. Can’t wait to discuss this topic with them about a single electron being in 2 places at the same time.
Does anybody watch “Fringe”? Hubby and I love that show.
