Meatballs at midnight

Today was full of the usual activities.  Our day started at 7:00 with the oldest 2 playing soccer followed by ballet and gymnastics for my daughter and then 2 games of lacrosse in the afternoon for the oldest son.  It’s so cold here that outside activities are dreaded by me even though the calendar says it’s spring.  Ready for the pollen and bees!

This evening I cooked, well sort-of.  My girlfriend suggested I buy meatballs instead of making them for use in subs-brilliant! Some of my kids enjoyed the dish and some didn’t, but I actually made a double recipe of corn chowder from scratch (Is that what you say?).  Again, some of my kids liked the recipe, and some didn’t. They loved the corn muffins, although I’m sad to report that those were store bought so no credit there.

I wrapped the evening up helping my second son make an array that he designed to display at Excelsior’s performance night this week. I taught him how to use a hot glue gun. I think he burned my fingers a few times, but it was worth it for him to create the project so that he could take pride in what he had made.

So, now I’m eating those meatballs I told you about earlier as I type this.  It’s midnight, and everyone is asleep but me.  Once I finish typing this I’m going to go mop my kitchen floor-good times as we say. Where else in the day do I do this? You may be thinking, why doesn’t she have the kids clean? Believe me, I do, but sometimes I just like them to go to sleep so that I can hear my own thoughts for a few minutes, even if it is with a mop!

Medicine and technology

As a former physician, I’m attracted to what’s happening with medicine and technology.  Consider sharing this article and others similar to your older students who may be interested in these types of fields.

Less anxious, maybe

Full day of academics, but we covered almost everything that I’d hoped we would. Anytime we can do that I’m so thankful, and any anxiety that may be there is diminished. Equally important was that we enjoyed ourselves as we learned, and we enjoyed what we learned. Some days I do feel like we are just crossing things off of the checklist, and I hate that. The checklist is not what real learning should be about and how it should be done. Learning should excite them and me. Not every circumstance can be that way, but one can make a general statement regarding the learning process and environment.
Some topics we covered today: addition, cursive, SWR phonics, reading, poetry, piano, French, comprehension techniques, critical thinking skills, early explorers, landforms and rocks, fractions in word problems, HTML, possessives, plurals, letter writing, Venetian artists, spelling, and multiplication, Dr. Dolittle, Life of Fred, and the Hardy Boys.
I’m forgetting things, but that’s at least an idea.
My biggest challenge, as I’ve previously mentioned, is the time factor and getting that one-on-one with each of them. A primary goal of mine is to mold them into independent learners.
Activities for us today: 3 hours of gymnastics, 1 hour of soccer, and Scouts and in between I made it to the gym, a treat for me.
After we made it home for a late dinner around 8:30, we still had studies to finish so the kids finally made it to bed around 10:30. Now, that’s late for them, and I don’t like going that long in the day, so most likely I’ll let them sleep in:)  Being able to adjust your sleep schedule is certainly a benefit of homeschooling.
Off to prep for tomorrow. Still doing research on math and what things might be of value in our home studies. There’s so much out there that it’s overwhelming at times. More work to be done!

Discovering the fountain of youth

I participated in the adult fitness class tonight at my kids’ sports training facility. The instructor made us do all kinds of crazy things like pulling ropes and racing against balls. About 1/2 way through the class I was wishing for it to be over! Boy, did I feel middle-age. It’s incredibly frustrating because in my mind I think that I’m in my 20’s but my body was reminding me that I’m not! Yes, I need one of these companies like FutureMed to discover the fountain of youth. Maybe my kids will invent some magic potion one day.
Oh, well. Makes for a good laugh.
Off to prep for tomorrow..
